Café de Coral Group launches ‘Say No to Straws’ commencing on January 1, 2019

Café de Coral Holdings Limited (SEHK: 0341) announces the implementation of ‘Say No to Straws’ starting from January 1, 2019 – all outlets will stop providing plastic straws unless requested by the customers, including special drinks.

Since June 2018, the Group has supported the ‘No Straw Campaign’ initiated by Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong (OPCFHK) and has raised the frequency from monthly to weekly, with an aim to gradually changing the spending habits of the customers. Besides, Café de Coral fast food stores have completely replaced the plastic stirrers and tea spoons with wooden sticks for hot drinks. Plastic knives have also been taken out from the take-away cutlery packs. The Group is researching on combining plastic fork and spoon into one, which will eventually reduce the number of plastic items for take-away. The options of ‘Bring your own meal box’, ‘Bring your own cup’ and ‘No straw’ are available in the smart kiosks and mobile food ordering apps. It is expected that the amount of single-use plastics distributed will diminish by half with all those measures.

Peter Lo, Chief Executive Officer of Café de Coral Group expressed, ‘we have deep concern for the issue of phasing out single-use plastics. Understanding the importance of public education, we will reinforce the promotion of “Say No to Straws” with advertisements and in-store promotional materials, so as to deliver the message effectively. Currently, the Group has been taking various approaches in reducing the use of plastics. We proactively cooperate with the suppliers to explore alternative materials which fit the food safety requirements without inducing adverse impact on the environment. While keeping the reduction of single-use plastics usage as the short-term goal, we aim at terminating single-use plastic cutlery usage completely in long run.’
